Thistles have been growing in the nursery garden over the summer, and this one had got as far as to flower. Such a pretty flower, so I took a photo before I dug it up. It is interesting how the leaves are so prickly but the flowers so fluffy looking.
I visited Lynne's blog tonight and she had a
post explaining how she layers oil pastel and gouache with bits of other things as she builds up her faces. I wanted to try it! I used yellow oil pastel as a base, then white gouache and various little bits of gouache and watercolour. I drew the face with an inktense pencil which in the dim light of the sitting room looked like a graphite one. Her hair is Red Earth and her neck Cool Grey-a gorgeous grey which I love. At one point she went horribly wrong on the left side and I had to wipe that part with paper towel. But I like how it came out after that better than it was before-phew!
Do you remember Charlie's Angels? It was my favourite programme from the years of about 10 until 13 and I just loved Kelly. I wanted to be Kelly. I wanted to live in Los Angeles and solve crime. This quote from Kelly Garrett's
wikipedia page sums up Kelly's greatness...
'Kelly is a favorite angel to many viewers, showing beauty, grace, and know-how in each episode. In one she successfully delivers a baby, but when later asked how many she had delivered previously, she mentions that she had only seen it on television. This shows she has medical skills as well as the ability to keep calm in an unfamiliar situation, a skill any undercover detective should posess.'
The picture is on the box of my Kelly jigsaw! I seem to have splattered paint on it which I must wipe off. Air did a song called
'Kelly Watch the Stars' which I think is to do with her. The video is strange.

I like your painting, especially the way you painted her face. And wow, I hadn't watched that music video in ages!!
Your painting is excellent- better than the real Kelly!
Great likeness of her, especially the nose!
Love the Stone Witch's hair! Very Vivienne Westwood. Wish mine had body and curl like that.
I liked Kelly best too. And I have thistle flowers on my blog this week too. They are such a splash of colour.
Interesting combination of mediums. Trying new things keeps our minds and eyes open. I like it!
Love the painting! I never watched Charlie's Angels, but somehow I know who the characters were!!
