I love the blurriness of this photo. I think this one was really far away.
On the first evening we walked to the local pub for dinner and saw this heron really close by.

I woke up on the second morning to look out and see this beautiful scene, reminiscent of a Japanese painting.
At first I thought there was one heron fishing the bay. But on the third day I saw Ella, a little dog living next door, (I know her name because she is a little bit of a naughty dog who needs to be called an awful lot!) running happily on the beach, scaring all the birds trying to feed. Especially exciting, was to see four herons flying away to avoid her. Then, when I looked more carefully each evening I could often see two or three perched on the rocks. One of my favourite birds and I got to see some every day!
Again, a lot of photos but I can't choose my favourite!

You're right. It does look like a Japanese painting. I really like the monochromatic mistyness of it. If I had to choose a favorite I might lean a little toward the one with the heron looking to the right with the red marker buoy in the distance. But they are are very fine.
We have herons here as well and they are an oddity in the way they fly and are put together, but they seem to be very efficient and clever fishers.
These amazing photos- surreal- they are ALL my favorite- We have blue herons here- they are a bit sleeker than you very dramatic herons. Love these shots, Sarah! They are prize worthy!Thank you for showing us.
Thank you Leenie and Linda Sue! I just love them as they are so big and impressive. I do see them here at times over near and area called Thamesmead but it was a treat to see them every day. I loved hearing them make their stragne noise-squawky sounding-which I have never heard before. They sound very grumpy!
I do love the photos! I think they also have a Japanese feel to them. Herons are very interesting and I love cranes too. It's always so interesting to see such large birds fly.
You know I love herons too - every time we go into Hawick we have a detour to the river to see if the heron is there! I love your 'Japanese' photo - you shoud get it printed on canvas.
Herons always look to me as if they should be in a story book. I don't know why! :)
