A while ago whale! It is a miniature version of one I am going to make with the children at the beginning of the term. I rashly said that I could do an art project with the year six children instead of the art company they usually use, and, as a practice made two large totem poles last term to test my theory. They came out pretty well, but involved an awful lot of preparation work and the few afternoons over which we made them were busy to say the least. But I enjoyed it. It was a project done in the aftenoons following the SATS tests in the mornings, so it was a stress relieving activity for them I hope. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1u_edShuQijOfjLjCa1JnyLZ0kOzMFi2BZFRx3hoNZYUSMvIFcHt39Jbut8zhYNVJBpadjhyXOAyXB35NeOJT4ge_pHC7r9JvAM9qvZ8kd7qNcpNx5q8U1ZThbMD66a4MYxUfkGEmCb7YLVTGhLSr7KCUf2sc-2vkiGTcXK9MkX64lmH28e4-GQO-SQ/s1600/IMG_8488.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1u_edShuQijOfjLjCa1JnyLZ0kOzMFi2BZFRx3hoNZYUSMvIFcHt39Jbut8zhYNVJBpadjhyXOAyXB35NeOJT4ge_pHC7r9JvAM9qvZ8kd7qNcpNx5q8U1ZThbMD66a4MYxUfkGEmCb7YLVTGhLSr7KCUf2sc-2vkiGTcXK9MkX64lmH28e4-GQO-SQ/w640-h480/IMG_8488.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgtH9ntYYa5XY7ekYjwNoEAVmSHZn3D67bvxJqw3ZAT_V_cpStOcV5ddsGe35w8xXbYCahQmOZjNPxEyFHwg0M1nZNuwMDutkQIivaPSy6L935CUcTWV_vbloMEL7Anzo8r9VgcYK6ey9q5oCHcBo3o6BV2o998ori0lVMjlJaSJMSWP3qnX00F7xdq_w" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgtH9ntYYa5XY7ekYjwNoEAVmSHZn3D67bvxJqw3ZAT_V_cpStOcV5ddsGe35w8xXbYCahQmOZjNPxEyFHwg0M1nZNuwMDutkQIivaPSy6L935CUcTWV_vbloMEL7Anzo8r9VgcYK6ey9q5oCHcBo3o6BV2o998ori0lVMjlJaSJMSWP3qnX00F7xdq_w=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></div>The animals are all British wildlife.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgs40JiFqDonGauWOZIyb9EPc184AS6uGozxxKdRJZfCx5IVgmqtADXpGx5ogjQ5CGn-WFbo2Z6Vi8JijY3i7YU04rBImD-WQQPtyKDSIvienHNSyY29rxlEq-9oTnWmKt49KwLhqYRWLZmlz7pVL_HL7KuuiZUO95KcRDSlTocvmxfKE5aVTNmtDYRTw" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgs40JiFqDonGauWOZIyb9EPc184AS6uGozxxKdRJZfCx5IVgmqtADXpGx5ogjQ5CGn-WFbo2Z6Vi8JijY3i7YU04rBImD-WQQPtyKDSIvienHNSyY29rxlEq-9oTnWmKt49KwLhqYRWLZmlz7pVL_HL7KuuiZUO95KcRDSlTocvmxfKE5aVTNmtDYRTw=w480-h640" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">With that project I worked with the whole classes with the help of two teaching assistants. Working out the logistics is just as important as how to do the art, in fact it is the part I find the hardest! For this project with an ocean theme, and also an environmental one, I have planned a number of things to make. The whale is the biggest and will be made from withies (willow sticks) which I am just going to call 'sticks' as every adult I have told about them has said "Willies?" So I am going for sticks. You soak them for a few hours which makes them pliable. This whale is a scale model. The big one will be made in the same way, with three sections hooked together so that there is a little movement. </div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglP65NM-8nrotGiqqq83VsHKKMY3YOR8anCrG2Lts-zKfj2VZW66s4I6JXqoBh6w_zGmphh2GbTiwIzWMtGMtDHOzOBW3iZCzuZL65yQtr8kzQGsw9JyEsrJvUcQAt7j_Ldmb02LVQJtpidTlc8mkSXZcaZccbyIiIgpBiK6834miBGkRlGYNYnRYZdA/s1600/IMG_8467.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglP65NM-8nrotGiqqq83VsHKKMY3YOR8anCrG2Lts-zKfj2VZW66s4I6JXqoBh6w_zGmphh2GbTiwIzWMtGMtDHOzOBW3iZCzuZL65yQtr8kzQGsw9JyEsrJvUcQAt7j_Ldmb02LVQJtpidTlc8mkSXZcaZccbyIiIgpBiK6834miBGkRlGYNYnRYZdA/w640-h480/IMG_8467.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>After making the armature, you wrap it in cling film. This provides a surface to papier maché tissue paper onto. I am going to justify the use of plastic because it is an artwork and won't be thrown away. ( A bit dubious but I can't make it in another way.) Another of the things we will make is a 'great garbage patch' as found in most of the world's oceans. This will be a (hopefully) spinning large mobile. I have been reading a lot about plastic pollution and it does not make happy reading. There is micro plastic in absolutely everything. I was reading about 'nurdles' tonight. They are tiny plastic pellets used to make a lot of different things. They keep being spilled into the sea because of ships sinking, catching fire, and careless practices. Although I am finding it all pretty depressing and hopeless, I don't want to engender that feeling in the children, so will obviously approach the subject in terms of finding out what the problem is, and thinking of ways that we as individuals an contribute to making things better. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglkYyNcTyees_SgnhPrWrS7Qpd_XXn5I6UcJ6tlNfpx2OnxyCTcr4rdK81KxCzuVAGs-e2cGu_jQauLtwftDagKfFMrsDKwd4ss4Q3qfJDgX3jrg3r520LnoWls4YIa5ez-lVMOamwjenlWM1mVFZCdvNR0dLhLXFRrGE8MVYPokMSQ3BKnOnJsKpidQ/s1600/IMG_8472.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglkYyNcTyees_SgnhPrWrS7Qpd_XXn5I6UcJ6tlNfpx2OnxyCTcr4rdK81KxCzuVAGs-e2cGu_jQauLtwftDagKfFMrsDKwd4ss4Q3qfJDgX3jrg3r520LnoWls4YIa5ez-lVMOamwjenlWM1mVFZCdvNR0dLhLXFRrGE8MVYPokMSQ3BKnOnJsKpidQ/w640-h480/IMG_8472.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>As the paper dries, it has a kind of shrink wrap effect on the plastic. In the small model that was fine. This week I had a go with the withies. I made a large fish. It is good to try things as I have found out the pitfalls now! First, the shrinkage is much more obvious. I like the bony look it gives, but the planned gaps on the big whale need to be much smaller. That is easy as we can just add more circles. The other problem was strength and stability. On the small model I used wire, which holds its shape and is quite strong. I just had circles and struts lengthways. On the fish, I found I needed crosses in the circles to provide strength. They can also be used to give the circles an oval shape. I was trying to work out how to get the children to make circles of the right diameter. (They are all planned out in my scale drawing.) Once I realised I would need more than I thought, I decided that rather than giving them the measurements and expecting them to make the correct sizes, I would make one of each size needed then attach a piece of tape to say how many more we need. I also realised that using masking tape to fix the circles is much easier than using string!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9io-eb6FcbTHjhCvPoSFTBsT7Sy74NHDwQVuuMEESPdvGX8R4eDHLuBx1ElPw8IVBCSaRPdOBD7atuVR0qWFo0diFF1tqRQVlfw8FWlnSj_otMlPCqTcJ-s2uaFl00zwOVLmRPelfuEWk9p0RG2HllKpSg7mz8EQie4ThYZ2TsJmxu96-sBhtH7Uu0A/s1600/IMG_8475.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9io-eb6FcbTHjhCvPoSFTBsT7Sy74NHDwQVuuMEESPdvGX8R4eDHLuBx1ElPw8IVBCSaRPdOBD7atuVR0qWFo0diFF1tqRQVlfw8FWlnSj_otMlPCqTcJ-s2uaFl00zwOVLmRPelfuEWk9p0RG2HllKpSg7mz8EQie4ThYZ2TsJmxu96-sBhtH7Uu0A/w640-h480/IMG_8475.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>I did a whole layer of light blue, then a top layer of dark blue with added paint details. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtps8tpZFHa0RRuArtFk8lcu4a6CyDdoTeR92o5yRmQGMug3qMYULANxnsyS_r3CC27DL7kgr-wbmLg2AIIuizrEQvQCYW_wCydH-jynPJwQLgQVp47tWgQ1wWcRkyoE6To3MmjFfNQqJQ0aVc1eqrbjs2mXIe-sRzbKjpT3JB1qdAeCmy_4Tgue3s2Q/s1600/IMG_8483.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtps8tpZFHa0RRuArtFk8lcu4a6CyDdoTeR92o5yRmQGMug3qMYULANxnsyS_r3CC27DL7kgr-wbmLg2AIIuizrEQvQCYW_wCydH-jynPJwQLgQVp47tWgQ1wWcRkyoE6To3MmjFfNQqJQ0aVc1eqrbjs2mXIe-sRzbKjpT3JB1qdAeCmy_4Tgue3s2Q/w640-h480/IMG_8483.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_RSyeihOoTpDz0MZ1OVrt-mNGPnd9Do8cyuX6YB7i9MZOzslO1D0gUKU2fjdCyr2IjzBv0cBZpv3bw65AbiHMa_2rYdWIyWNYMIK4MUGeq1m5b1M3zTca7KyB3VtH-jQFqI8Ncv136tnI7mPawRBNsjoupJAbv4yzi7MJCvg_E3eeGoTWTBDCzO71lg/s1600/IMG_8484.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_RSyeihOoTpDz0MZ1OVrt-mNGPnd9Do8cyuX6YB7i9MZOzslO1D0gUKU2fjdCyr2IjzBv0cBZpv3bw65AbiHMa_2rYdWIyWNYMIK4MUGeq1m5b1M3zTca7KyB3VtH-jQFqI8Ncv136tnI7mPawRBNsjoupJAbv4yzi7MJCvg_E3eeGoTWTBDCzO71lg/w640-h480/IMG_8484.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4sw6fNkVcXiKKZZpc783oFvDc8WFMuT9TtbjfxaVEAyyu6oB8EXkDSnUX0AEWjgPa7LZKZHu-71JVdu25Wwi9D8IhIhutjUsZbBaPXVh6-j17naHCYD9wldmXVHeQm3NMSk4D2xbgeZTRRvvHkVK5FQ3BQnDhZlAcPEjTBEV6j3I72OOOE2LgSPPjQ/s1600/IMG_8487.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4sw6fNkVcXiKKZZpc783oFvDc8WFMuT9TtbjfxaVEAyyu6oB8EXkDSnUX0AEWjgPa7LZKZHu-71JVdu25Wwi9D8IhIhutjUsZbBaPXVh6-j17naHCYD9wldmXVHeQm3NMSk4D2xbgeZTRRvvHkVK5FQ3BQnDhZlAcPEjTBEV6j3I72OOOE2LgSPPjQ/w640-h480/IMG_8487.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">He is hanging on a lovely piece of chain I found by the river. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLCa5tftvoeQc77mT4-N2QJNGpztrwhVjJ_14McylPYkQLtCcqbOUWtaw8ZOLgrqEg_7ZsycsPsOIa29nUhtbqd9aK2Nmy8bytYNQkEG9ugEEbs4DAStzNozNmaUqmPWC-KKjqIvqXjnTeqcQiDPbs-BWfbCKJwPE7mZWRZnX6JUB4vEBHwtpK1Yd2oQ/s1600/IMG_8490.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLCa5tftvoeQc77mT4-N2QJNGpztrwhVjJ_14McylPYkQLtCcqbOUWtaw8ZOLgrqEg_7ZsycsPsOIa29nUhtbqd9aK2Nmy8bytYNQkEG9ugEEbs4DAStzNozNmaUqmPWC-KKjqIvqXjnTeqcQiDPbs-BWfbCKJwPE7mZWRZnX6JUB4vEBHwtpK1Yd2oQ/w640-h480/IMG_8490.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>These pictures are awful but it gives an idea of how pretty the whale looked all lit up! I couldn't think how to make this easily as I wanted it to have some dimension to it. Then I came up with the idea of corrugated plastic (Which will be re-used!). I tried that yesterday too and it worked pretty well. I will show you the results when we have finished. I have done most of the preparation now, and just need to finalise how we are going to do it. This time I will be working with smaller groups so have more flexibility with how I organise things. <div>I have enjoyed finding out a lot more than I knew before about all things related to the project, such as how lobsters can grow to around three and a half feet, shedding their exoskeletons regularly as they grow larger, and the things that look like roots on seaweed aren't, but are anchors instead. The lobsters are going to have pipecleaner legs and feelers. I used a plastic lobster that came from Andy's parents, as a model for my prototype, and ordered a job lot of orange pipe cleaners. It was only after they arrived that I realised I don't want the children to make cooked lobsters, but live ones! Back to eBay for blue pipecleaners! <br /> <p></p></div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941415622199071141noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2527249508675423548.post-86507947974688003972022-07-24T15:13:00.003-07:002022-07-24T15:19:06.258-07:00An Adventure<p> Today we went to Chilslehurst to visit the caves. I have been meaning to go there for years but haven't. Our niece works in Chislehurst and suggested it when we last saw her. They are not actually caves, but a mine. Druids, Romans and later miners dug out 22 miles of tunnels from the chalk and flint. Dr William Nicholls claimed, in 1903 that the tunnels were excavated by Saxons, Romans and Druids, although there is no evidence for Druid occupation. The mine was worked until the end of the 19th century. There is a part of the caves with a stage and musicians including David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix played there. They were used as a munitions store in WW1 and as air raid shelters in WW2. There were so many people using them that a kind of underground town developed. One baby was born down there during an air raid. She was christened in the chapel there. Her name was Cavena! She changed it to Rose when she reached 18 but kept it as her middle name. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The guide was good, and we all carried paraffin lanterns which added to the spooky atmosphere. At one point we stopped at a large ledge at the end of a tunnel. It could have been part of the continued working of the chalk, or a Druid sacrificial altar. (I personally thought it was the first one!) The guide went away and turned on a soundtrack of some pretty convincing sounds of an air raid for us to experience. The atmosphere of the place is strange. I suppose because of the damp dark coolness of it but imagination adds its own flavour too I think.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We stopped at an underground pool, where the remains of a woman in a white dress were found. She is supposed to haunt the pool and there are meant to be other restless spirits and strange goings on. Our guide has worked there for 5 years and has spent a lot of time down there getting to know the place. He says he has never seen anything but has heard sounds. He didn't specify so I had to ask. Children's laughter, footsteps and jangling keys! There used to be a challenge that if you could spend the night in the part of the caves where the pool is, alone, that you would win £5. (When £5 was a lot) Only one person ever managed it-a local policeman and he said he would never do it again no matter how much you paid him.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Once back in the daylight and warmth, we went for a delicious Sunday lunch at the Bickley Arms. It was a hard day though as once I got there I realised I didn't feel that great and it was also very hot so I was moving at a very slow pace! I feel much better today though and have almost returned to my normal level of activity. I didn't do much last week, apart from sewing-making little sampler type things with scraps and embroidery thread. They were relaxing to do and I like small projects. I also repaired the cardigan of my Mum's bear, and made her a little dress from some vintage Laura Ashley fabric I got for a pound in Greenwich recently. She looks really pretty in her new dress. The other repair is of Mickey, my companion since I was three. I did it a while ago now. He is sitting on the left below, next to charity shop floor rescued blue bear with no nose. He was face down on the dusty charity shop floor a while ago and I couldn't leave him there. I have a problem leaving bears on the floor! He was 50p! I still have not given him a nose though. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsWzrxta9MalpXEK2600xHjBiZrwAUJRu1ka8s_C-hJlNkY678t_Lo9XQrB6sGnmGf6D3VJtc7txL8brTXgNFqp0rosZdiZf1YruIMOvPezF9YMEESOyu4UetFI35aOalV4DiBdxkDEEqL4oRhMhzpL9yBRpm_0nh2AL5l8j5muTITffJQcqwLRhD3vQ/s1600/IMG_8215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsWzrxta9MalpXEK2600xHjBiZrwAUJRu1ka8s_C-hJlNkY678t_Lo9XQrB6sGnmGf6D3VJtc7txL8brTXgNFqp0rosZdiZf1YruIMOvPezF9YMEESOyu4UetFI35aOalV4DiBdxkDEEqL4oRhMhzpL9yBRpm_0nh2AL5l8j5muTITffJQcqwLRhD3vQ/w640-h480/IMG_8215.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>Mickey has been repaired numerous times, by my Mum, Nan and Gran, and also by me. He has had a few recoverings and bears no resemblance to his original self. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_pFzQLD9LJZi8qyn0X1VeDHDpa229Nl4XLvTHQEhP53aPlSaKBA2SuSSh7EijobmvvLekNPqGB-lA6oeqOMKxg7Z0JUXXrMNh1gkqMD92bEcc2Llx15X4G66_dBQCo6ZK-7larfjdVLUYAgeHzyBQJoxw6RnRu3uIrj82Pk2Atupnm9UtOQcGbXHOkw/s2048/IMG_0606.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_pFzQLD9LJZi8qyn0X1VeDHDpa229Nl4XLvTHQEhP53aPlSaKBA2SuSSh7EijobmvvLekNPqGB-lA6oeqOMKxg7Z0JUXXrMNh1gkqMD92bEcc2Llx15X4G66_dBQCo6ZK-7larfjdVLUYAgeHzyBQJoxw6RnRu3uIrj82Pk2Atupnm9UtOQcGbXHOkw/w480-h640/IMG_0606.JPEG" width="480" /></a></div>Once I had taken all the coverings off, what remained was a very threadbare body with no arms, and big holes everywhere. There were a few wisps of fur, and a little original foot fabric. The knitting is part of his repairs in the past. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-EE7HeM36BwMnpl1zHr8k-tuWWkfnWs4xOmMuPSNsz2CPt_sBBqjZSsdcPFoxeoXTpBmfcK-BNU-1RVJv0oWQu4duErlTLrYmQx8MuX5emYxgXy_7URscF3xYvH22Hvec7sNRwTSUcNqZ43athF44_5NCNVJ3ij52bQywFD5sal97WJ0-fCvbeK60-w/s2048/IMG_0607.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-EE7HeM36BwMnpl1zHr8k-tuWWkfnWs4xOmMuPSNsz2CPt_sBBqjZSsdcPFoxeoXTpBmfcK-BNU-1RVJv0oWQu4duErlTLrYmQx8MuX5emYxgXy_7URscF3xYvH22Hvec7sNRwTSUcNqZ43athF44_5NCNVJ3ij52bQywFD5sal97WJ0-fCvbeK60-w/w480-h640/IMG_0607.JPEG" width="480" /></a></div>First of all I used cotton fabric ro fill the holes, and reconstruct his nose and arms. This meant I was able to stuff him. I used Kapok as it seemed more suitable than polyfill. He was originally stuffed with that horrid foam stuff in small pieces. I think it was the stuffing of choice in the 60s.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSs9YVNFt3yv4iXg3xbBR5RXp08jlzZgArBECCeXevf4O29ihfXyFeZLTKOH-dM5C0N5IMb6wPhwKD7T-P4n7xvLOv3docS7Etd54xHJJhk5146b9TPI-2Ysmt0HFEoFYEzvmrSFe7oFNAj6XhkpgAikFztxRAARrxUyMqsiDze8uv4dydsnPDt5GyKA/s2048/IMG_0610.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSs9YVNFt3yv4iXg3xbBR5RXp08jlzZgArBECCeXevf4O29ihfXyFeZLTKOH-dM5C0N5IMb6wPhwKD7T-P4n7xvLOv3docS7Etd54xHJJhk5146b9TPI-2Ysmt0HFEoFYEzvmrSFe7oFNAj6XhkpgAikFztxRAARrxUyMqsiDze8uv4dydsnPDt5GyKA/w480-h640/IMG_0610.JPEG" width="480" /></a></div>It took a long time to get around to this repair as I couldn't find the right fabric. Somehow I just didn't feel like it and there is no point doing something if you don't feel like it. But tonight, with at least another five days of nothingness ahead of me, I suddenly feel like it! Andy had covid last week and is still testing positive today, and I now have it, starting from Sunday so cannot go to school for at least five days. I found out yesterday afternoon that my school have Ofsted this week so lucky timing of finally catching covid. I felt ok yesterday, but have felt worse today. Mainly aching, and a bad headache and headachey eyes. I took paracetamol which has helped. Also very tired. I had a long sleep in the middle of the day today as nothing else seemed viable. Anyway, have perked up slightly now. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Eyeless (temporarily) bear from the floor of Deptford market. I was there at closing time one evening a couple of months ago and the stall holders just leave stuff behind on the ground. There were a couple of people searching through it for anything worth taking and at first I didn't join them, even though I wanted to. I was way too early to meet my friend so was walking circuits of the area, and twice walked past sad panda lying on the ground. I went back to my car to get a bag, then swooped in to rescue him. Only five minutes later the bin lorries were there scooping up all the stuff so he was saved from ending his furry days in a litter crusher. He was destuffed, machine washed, restuffed, combed and is now awaiting eyes. I have some, but have not yet sewn them on. Him and eyeless bear have been waiting a while. His fur came up pretty well and is very soft after washing. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpzCwCr_qTDZFRpU6XCOJfY11SHWHIMqYP9NINw7P4CV0XbHRkWkQyfk-Dlv1FQ9EpZhuFziwvt4j9ovzPYaxN6T8_DrSz6M5OXPiKeFnU0XEqhwyWC4vn2pgEqNMsasFP2gyGWfonaDDm052aUQ3yk2HW7REWYwIWFavkjhyJVKlP6AzqkXwm_zexUQ/s2048/IMG_1415.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpzCwCr_qTDZFRpU6XCOJfY11SHWHIMqYP9NINw7P4CV0XbHRkWkQyfk-Dlv1FQ9EpZhuFziwvt4j9ovzPYaxN6T8_DrSz6M5OXPiKeFnU0XEqhwyWC4vn2pgEqNMsasFP2gyGWfonaDDm052aUQ3yk2HW7REWYwIWFavkjhyJVKlP6AzqkXwm_zexUQ/w480-h640/IMG_1415.JPEG" width="480" /></a></div>Large faced lady drawn with alcohol markers on a gessoed background in my current journal. Then do the flooring. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ7YyuqU3SDYIcqF1bm0vl636uuCCJGx8kPGVJ_9DW92HV9xXOp2UTyJkxM3MyqnVmuvany9xAs5CYWPEiQwhb1NsigiaLE-1tmCnqYhu4rYdG-39CBvTU9UBIxkaV2Igny3-fQ2tPyVT1s8HoHz87WCFgj6UG0U1QqGihrFBkG-2vdRkUnvT0V1UzVQ/s2048/IMG_1513.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ7YyuqU3SDYIcqF1bm0vl636uuCCJGx8kPGVJ_9DW92HV9xXOp2UTyJkxM3MyqnVmuvany9xAs5CYWPEiQwhb1NsigiaLE-1tmCnqYhu4rYdG-39CBvTU9UBIxkaV2Igny3-fQ2tPyVT1s8HoHz87WCFgj6UG0U1QqGihrFBkG-2vdRkUnvT0V1UzVQ/w480-h640/IMG_1513.JPEG" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">It was fun peeling the paper off!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWf07iELf5WIA2osgCDK_chCE4vAGG9a6ZWryEVisftvx1l5AtPgSlkh_URhGXqLoNqYgnKvKRdEugdSM5kxQzmDIMFJvCxus1iEvwd-CH0KxTNIv6UcfTIgog2ifZr6X2534rTLatDfR1BrRZU2FOmonT-by7gIvz928MAi1Ynq8Iccaqgs9L2oN8jg/s2048/IMG_1538.JPEG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWf07iELf5WIA2osgCDK_chCE4vAGG9a6ZWryEVisftvx1l5AtPgSlkh_URhGXqLoNqYgnKvKRdEugdSM5kxQzmDIMFJvCxus1iEvwd-CH0KxTNIv6UcfTIgog2ifZr6X2534rTLatDfR1BrRZU2FOmonT-by7gIvz928MAi1Ynq8Iccaqgs9L2oN8jg/w480-h640/IMG_1538.JPEG" width="480" /></a></div>I am making a baby blanket for Sophie who I used to work with. They kept flying off and coming back again like a little gang. There must have been insects in the branches though I didn't see them eating. We used to call them Spadgers at home. Andy used to call them Spuggies. I am from Kent and he is from Northumberland. Apparently they are called Spyng or Spurdie in the Orkneys, and Chummy, Craff and Hoosie in other places. They are the perfect LBB. (Little Brown Bird-I think that is a kind of twitcher joke for unidentified birds) A number of years ago there was quite a decline in their numbers, and I remember noticing there were not as many around. They are on the endangered species list in the UK I think but their numbers are gradually climbing. I am not. I see big things and blue things. Blue glass stands out beautifully so can be tiny and I will see it. Bricks with lettering have a strange fascination and I have got a small collection. In this box are all my partial electricity cable bricks. I have one that is nearly whole, and I like the small piece that says CITY. The Ramsay brick is from Rotherhithe. I saw it on a gloomy winter afternoon and decided to be sensible, and leave it embedded where it was. Then I got all obsessive once I got home, and went back early one morning, possibly the next morning but I can't remember. That is one of only two times I have been on the foreshore in the dark. It was very early in the morning, about 5.30 or 6 and a bright full moon. It was a bit scary and spooky but magical at the same time. I knew exactly where it was buried so could go straight there and then home again. The piece of carved marble is from the foreshore at Woolwich. There are lots of pieces of lovely marble there. I still have not been to the foreshore properly for ages, but I did pop down there on the way to Esme the cat on Christmas day. I picked up one thing, a piece of china with a wing on it, possibly that of an angel.</div><p></p>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941415622199071141noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2527249508675423548.post-82903670862306350532022-01-12T11:14:00.002-08:002022-01-14T00:40:00.827-08:00Sheerness<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Another trip to the storage unit today, and time for a coffee on the beach! It was a beautiful day. I picked up pretty stones, strolled along for a while, then off home again. My storage unit is now very full. We are having some damp curing work done in the bedroom next week, so I have been trying to clear even more stuff. My routine is to go there, then to go on to Sheerness which is about two miles away, and get breakfast from Tesco's cafe, then go to the beach. Last time I went I didn't get to the beach as it was absolutely pouring down. Today was much better. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjNx9DkK3ZtAphILKinvzr3r067iLEOtb9w91Z4lPTmCQM4SyelxOCC6y6GDSH-6U91V6-QgDK5MAC9g3tugRI87-Sko2ut-qord0gY-r50n66BKhip52KB5WMPBjAGa8hik8rnC5EL_a44bZSNESaoB12gBFGSOEZ7NKjmjdt765amSdgmjf63rSSfvg=s3264" style="margin-left: 1em; It was in Greenwich in October, and I was there early one morning after a cat visit so went to have a look. She had many things wrong with her over the last number of years, but had medication and an adapted living space that met all her needs. But on the Sunday morning, she went blind. It was overnight, and could have been to do with her hyperthyroid disease. Whatever the cause though, the independence that she had would have been lost, and in addition to all her other conditions, we felt it was not fair to her to keep her going any longer. It was strange though, as even though she had, in my opinion anyway, had a traumatic thing happen to her, I could see her starting to adapt to the new situation almost straight away. She was an amazing and clever girl. We had a nice morning together, and she had cuddles, sleeps, ventured out for catnip, and had lots of her favourite food. The vet, as they always are, was very kind. We had to go to one in Beckenham as it was a Sunday so it was the emergency vet. It was very hard to leave her little body there. We now have her back in a little named box. Her name is spelled wrong, but that is part of her history, as the vets always had the wrong spelling, and it makes no difference to anything. Going to bed early and being very organised got me through, but I was glad when Friday arrived! One of my cat visits was to Huba and Mici in New Cross, a sweet combination of huge white boy cat, and tiny black girl cat, both of whom loved the laser toy and their food. Where they live is a dead end street that loops round on itself and is off the very busy main road to New Cross. Amazingly it has no parking restrictions. And even better, I realised halfway through the week that it is about a two minute walk from Deptford Market. I normally park near the dentist in Deptford which is a good 15 minute walk away, so was very happy to find this new place. Saturday morning was my last visit, so I couldn't resist a quick visit to the market afterwards. I found a few tiny things, but my best two finds are below. The doll was lying on top of some shelves on a stall that was mainly selling trainers. There was nothing else remotely old on the stall, and she called for immediate rescue! I love her dress and expression, and all she needs is a little clean of the dress and a new pigtail. The dress can be got off by unpicking a few stitches. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO-6eJK3pp5HJkGc-XnUDoQMzVbeyiDurCjD3GIprFxa9mWWFbIWlVTn3ncatvcHmD_4_KTMS4_RKxu887yS0GKzJxfpHhyphenhyphenHe4vvMCxy6PwdtOZravP6Q_IpmhhY9X3OJZn72PsLAuoWY0/s1600/1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO-6eJK3pp5HJkGc-XnUDoQMzVbeyiDurCjD3GIprFxa9mWWFbIWlVTn3ncatvcHmD_4_KTMS4_RKxu887yS0GKzJxfpHhyphenhyphenHe4vvMCxy6PwdtOZravP6Q_IpmhhY9X3OJZn72PsLAuoWY0/w480-h640/1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>She is sitting on top of the other great find, a Lloyd Loom laundry basket. I have been looking for a one for ages, and wanted a traditional wicker type with a lid. I have not found anything suitable. As I was about to go back to the car, I realised that I was surrounded by laundry baskets! But they were all either too big, or too dirty. Then I spotted this one. It was five pounds which is a lot cheaper than a modern one. It is slightly bashed but the hinge is good. I gave it a thorough vacuum, and wiped the wipeable bits. I thought about painting it. It is a strange dull pink colour with gold highlights, which at first I thought was someone's bad paint job. Then when I looked them up online I realised that this is how they looked. There was an aqua and gold combo too. I think they had glass tops on too, though maybe not all of them. So I am going to leave it for now. I have made a bag to sit inside out of a vintage tablecloth that Andy got ink on. I need to put some more hooks in, and will find some little toggle buttons or similar to make it easier to remove the lining. Lloyd Loom furniture, in case you didn't know, ( you probably do!) is made from rolled up paper.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.ghttps://www.gracesguide.co.uk/W._Lusty_and_Sonsoogleusercontent.com/-59AMW584yBM/YYgimvypSOI/AAAAAAAAffY/eYQLPOBYFYUoeqg5PolCjkaNYKZN1EaUACLcBGAsYHQ/image.png" rel="nofollow" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" data-original-height="1372" data-original-width="760" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdmrfYshyphenhyphenyIIteO75vqZc7Y5FTzMM2lDhlMmJogN83nDvYpMYHtC00OXPhGoBNkU79RnzcsqVayFolpCexGqbUXwW7bzUXcFEXCmKwKd4tx4fRy5GW3P3KhQ0fTZf0V0DRG83lbBV28ivi/w355-h640/image.png" width="355" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: courier;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">"1917 The legendary </span><i style="background-color: white; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">Lloyd Loom</i><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> process was invented by an American, Marshall B. The one I like the best is the crocodile hat which Hope is wearing. Madeline is the witch, AMF is the pumpkin. I bought dolls. I was in Greenwich to pick up Lily's drugs and cat keys, and I decided to go to the antique/junk (it really is both!) shop as I have not been there for a while. I found the girl on the right first. She was cheap and slightly cheaper at the till. Then I found the other one, and found out at the till that she was not cheap, but got a little cheaper, to coincide exactly with the amount of money my Dad kindly gave me for my birthday. So they both came home with me. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnpubfxckNvoHRuQf-9d8m4Y5TgBHRTxsOQQHWj3Z0QStKC95bnbdZX4q835g-2HATY2CUZaRJzpFlmwCzkDzVZ6lEENgfB32bKNJDkCUjZc4kuWRSNINMkyvacaku5KAeOOlD1-RwM7Sc/s1600/IMG_7551.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnpubfxckNvoHRuQf-9d8m4Y5TgBHRTxsOQQHWj3Z0QStKC95bnbdZX4q835g-2HATY2CUZaRJzpFlmwCzkDzVZ6lEENgfB32bKNJDkCUjZc4kuWRSNINMkyvacaku5KAeOOlD1-RwM7Sc/w640-h480/IMG_7551.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>They are sitting on the rocking chair looking quite pleased with themselves to have got out of the shop basement. They don't have names yet, but I expect they will come to me. The one on the right is an Ideal Doll, which is an American company, and is from around 1930. The one on the left has a composition body and bisque head and is made by Heubach Koppelsdorf, a German company and is from around 1910. Her head is in good condition though loose at the neck. Her limbs and body are composition I think, and have some cracks. She has a lovely face. I might attempt to go back to doll paintings so I can paint these two!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVZ0ECuo1uXj8WDhAdLEqzqFge85jl5yMn0VIY9XLmxl3MV7r7FE14WdWTbGbmpB4f9sRGheu0hMfBPeUhln39wfswAaF8H_ROVeK8qih90s098aiC6uTRdV0pwh1pfDPOmhdhWwPNzP1R/s1600/IMG_7552.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVZ0ECuo1uXj8WDhAdLEqzqFge85jl5yMn0VIY9XLmxl3MV7r7FE14WdWTbGbmpB4f9sRGheu0hMfBPeUhln39wfswAaF8H_ROVeK8qih90s098aiC6uTRdV0pwh1pfDPOmhdhWwPNzP1R/w480-h640/IMG_7552.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">I love her little teeth. It was called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXI10RqZ8Nk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">"Swan Corner"</a> and was filmed on a summer day in West Wickham. It is of footage of people going about their everyday business, accompanied by music. I loved it and am pleased that someone had the foresight to make such films as it is so interesting to see how almost everything has changed. One thing I noticed that hasn't is the street cleaner's trolley which was pretty much the same as today. </p><p>It led me to look for more films and I found this amazing site. <a href="https://www.londonsscreenarchives.org.uk/browse/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> London's Screen Archives</a></p><p>I haven't even started to explore it yet but it looks good. Just thought I would share my discoveries in case they are new to you too!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEJwU2PN6hfrTPb1E3Q4CxY-0RwtfNqYSz6o6Zc_y9Qs2xX0aizay2L4V25uXfVkprqyA6ZdW5vTGFXGw2tINxYa8krTxjAKREuLOvnZIyLNEncVWQPQy2WTavvf2EJXg7TCSw3kpczArn/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEJwU2PN6hfrTPb1E3Q4CxY-0RwtfNqYSz6o6Zc_y9Qs2xX0aizay2L4V25uXfVkprqyA6ZdW5vTGFXGw2tINxYa8krTxjAKREuLOvnZIyLNEncVWQPQy2WTavvf2EJXg7TCSw3kpczArn/w640-h480/IMG_8573.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>I knew if I looked through my old photos I would find a swan somewhere. This one is from Northumberland five years ago on the road trip Linda Sue and I took. Swans landing and taking off from water are most impressive. And saying that makes me wonder if they ever land on land?!<div><br /><div>Quick edit-"Swan Corner" is on the film archives site.<br /><p></p><p><br /></p></div></div>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941415622199071141noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2527249508675423548.post-17437983596235705892021-10-13T14:56:00.002-07:002021-10-13T14:56:59.631-07:00Random Wednesday<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Poor doll who needs help but is beautiful. As I arrived there today I saw a woman picking up the good stuff-interesting bird cage thing and something else that looked useful. I didn't pick up this car but I have taken stuff from here before and given it to a charity shop, as people just dump things all over the ground and not in the bins, much of it perfectly usable. Hopefully a person with a child who could use it took the car. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh6WP4vDSOANCzLx026eJoHEGBk8xkoPLnAFaPVBMMXU_q6qJZw4cDjLfNm1Cmm7yx5PbZcToJAoAS29IahzmYXOpDOaDK876Ju4WLq2dOF4sBiubBwu_11Jo8ZD4CR-W79fL_cxfl0PGm/s2048/IMG_5371.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh6WP4vDSOANCzLx026eJoHEGBk8xkoPLnAFaPVBMMXU_q6qJZw4cDjLfNm1Cmm7yx5PbZcToJAoAS29IahzmYXOpDOaDK876Ju4WLq2dOF4sBiubBwu_11Jo8ZD4CR-W79fL_cxfl0PGm/w480-h640/IMG_5371.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Soft drawing that appeared one night. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAiTBUXVa2YErfC-ISdJgK8qip32J3k2zr-VSUM5RSGawWG3CeF00EutQapXKV4YHzOCkVaRXmdeHK-ILedJajAg8BPSLUL5K_JyjrS4oBmOe_0y9dDSxdOqJkJgoMGgl_wwe3w3YymCz/s2048/IMG_5263.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXAiTBUXVa2YErfC-ISdJgK8qip32J3k2zr-VSUM5RSGawWG3CeF00EutQapXKV4YHzOCkVaRXmdeHK-ILedJajAg8BPSLUL5K_JyjrS4oBmOe_0y9dDSxdOqJkJgoMGgl_wwe3w3YymCz/w480-h640/IMG_5263.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">Hands found in Greenwich in the window of a gallery. Anyway, I was not at work, as I have a horrible cold (not covid-did a test) but felt better today than yesterday so thought I would go with him. We got a train, which happened to be a Thameslink, so we got off quite near to Holborn and walked. We walked too far and had to walk back again, but it was a nice day so never mind. We went past about 10 <a href="https://www.insulatebritain.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Insulate Britain</a> protesters, quietly protesting at the Royal Courts of Justice, and about twice as many police. The second place he had to go was near Leather Lane, where there was a food market going on.(Hot food stalls rather than veg etc). I went to explore while waiting for him, and turned off down a side street for a detour. The monster plant marathon. At the back of the garden, in front of the pond, there was a huge bush consisting of Buddleia, Dogwood and Honeysuckle, all tangled together. All lovely plants. All monsters. Combined they are almost unstoppable, and would probably have begun to take over the world soon if I hadn't stopped them! Honeysuckle seems to grow from the old wood, but this remains underneath in a scratchy tangle, with the odd twisting stem which twists around anything in its way. The Dogwood is amazing. It sends out long runners to the ground. These root in several places along the stem, and a new plant springs up from each rooted part. I managed to dig out quite a lot, and get it back a bit, and must now remember to stop them before they root. The stems are long and flexible, and when they go red they make great wreaths, but they are hard to pack into the bags I use to go to the recycling centre, as they spring out and whip you in the face. I continued on Monday, which is when the sun came out, so the cats came out too. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkGHMNZh-aU3bzn1Xvrl0vR-mCm1CYHRRR5OX3_Cy7P4DhI9rI46TLANlNA0YPGl0LK3mUE9XcSkfZWWP0eBXIMIc0zlQln0mvVhAHtwu24hn50bxuCSYAgRDEyHguycaCUrSCoxmcLgRP/s1600/IMG_7472.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkGHMNZh-aU3bzn1Xvrl0vR-mCm1CYHRRR5OX3_Cy7P4DhI9rI46TLANlNA0YPGl0LK3mUE9XcSkfZWWP0eBXIMIc0zlQln0mvVhAHtwu24hn50bxuCSYAgRDEyHguycaCUrSCoxmcLgRP/w640-h480/IMG_7472.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>This clearance will help me to find and retrieve the many footballs of nextdoor's two boys. I had just started teaching in Reception (4 and 5 year olds) The toys represent what I felt was really going on in my room while I was trying to teach phonics or any other subject. Fantasy land! They were a great class. The Pikachu is saying an actual quote from a child, said during one of my 'lessons'. I can still hear him saying it. I didn't fill in the other speech bubbles as I didn't have direct quotes. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5TGTO1kDHVYQV_CmawDG_-F9Bf6I8DNagQ8YaPgNkQkf4seK2TbTJ79p5DBubZxEn4o6BnNgmmmrmtzWOGVldBfjdeJSXD3OSP8FhmfTw4lxp9prdt0wniZJ0W6E0GCqoz3yjwwFpW7lb/s1204/IMG_7478.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1204" data-original-width="1083" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5TGTO1kDHVYQV_CmawDG_-F9Bf6I8DNagQ8YaPgNkQkf4seK2TbTJ79p5DBubZxEn4o6BnNgmmmrmtzWOGVldBfjdeJSXD3OSP8FhmfTw4lxp9prdt0wniZJ0W6E0GCqoz3yjwwFpW7lb/w576-h640/IMG_7478.JPG" width="576" /></a></div>All the toys are mine (surprise, surprise!) The plant is Andy's, then tiny fig tree. He watered a stick we found when we moved into our flat in Deptford, as he felt sorry for it. A little leaf popped out of the top of the twig. It is now a very big plant, about five feet tall. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /> <p></p>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941415622199071141noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2527249508675423548.post-41485044946114726682021-10-03T12:15:00.003-07:002021-10-03T12:17:52.171-07:00Weekend Stuff<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Yesterday we visited some freinds we have not seen for about ten years. Now they live in Battle, in the countryside on a smallholding! They only moved a little while ago but have great plans for what they will do there, including an orchard in one of the three fields. It is all very exciting. Because the weather was so bad yesterday, we drove around the fields while they talked about their plans. We had a lovely lunch, then had to rush off to get the train back as I had a cat to feed. The idea for her came from a <a href="https://www.capitalcollections.org.uk/view-item?i=21964&WINID=1632865215170" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">doll made from a shoe</a> in the<a href="https://www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/venue/museum-childhood" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Edinburgh Museum of Childhood</a> that I saw years ago when we were visiting Andy's parents. It always stayed in my mind as it is such a poignant item. I had not considered making one until recently, when trying to think of what to do with the old shoe soles I have collected from the Thames foreshore. I want to do embroidery on some, but this one was the perfect size and shape for a doll. Her hair is embroidered using some second hand thread. Her face is drawn with Polychromos pencils. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy6SP1xOmtdWrIpKDQjxM6rhUXfJipsk0L_IQiw9UUenVOF5_JE9Nn9Nm1lDIe0DhLI6ShvyuMXTD38JocVnGITXVUNWwyebp8AsUald1N684IWtUjz_xHX6GiYk9yU0xAJGw3ao37Aq50/s1600/IMG_7411.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy6SP1xOmtdWrIpKDQjxM6rhUXfJipsk0L_IQiw9UUenVOF5_JE9Nn9Nm1lDIe0DhLI6ShvyuMXTD38JocVnGITXVUNWwyebp8AsUald1N684IWtUjz_xHX6GiYk9yU0xAJGw3ao37Aq50/w480-h640/IMG_7411.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>The top of her dress is made from a piece of fabric I found on Dungeness beach years ago. It is very well preserved, and when I started cutting it, I realised that is because it is some horrible nylon type stuff that would probably last forever. He is the Frog Prince, so needs a crown. My Dad could have made one much more easily than me, but I wanted to do it. Above is my paint experiment area, trying various gold options. I was going to paint it yellow, but my yellow paint has gone lumpy, and a new tin is expensive, so I am trying gold stuff I already had, well, apart from the tiny tin of enamel paint, but that was a few pounds. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI3EtUaRAcSIduybZB2kVT68QcTNgZqdelxo7vvaPTiPPuZprASuIKQ1Ns5wzWSYVjgppDHds1zrq7hgOarhPcOFYrVwxoriM3OHLWNAwoha8lwQX3Fj0NVB_IdBkZHG7_kNNDUgqeNUwL/s1600/IMG_7414.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI3EtUaRAcSIduybZB2kVT68QcTNgZqdelxo7vvaPTiPPuZprASuIKQ1Ns5wzWSYVjgppDHds1zrq7hgOarhPcOFYrVwxoriM3OHLWNAwoha8lwQX3Fj0NVB_IdBkZHG7_kNNDUgqeNUwL/w480-h640/IMG_7414.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>In this photo it is easier to see the effects. The one at the bottom of the rectangle piece of wood is my favourite I think. It is Pebeo Prismé paint. They produce an effect that looks like hammered metal. It is oil based so should be ok outside. My other option is a gold wax, which I would have to varnish, so the little triangle has that on. I will decide in the morning!<p></p>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941415622199071141noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2527249508675423548.post-37935566428710307952021-09-23T09:44:00.001-07:002021-09-23T09:44:20.573-07:00Holiday Home<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When I saw this case in one of my favourite charity shops a while ago I knew exactly what it was. My Dad wanted two more frog signs for the fences either side of his gate. He cut the shapes out and I have painted one, and am nearly finished the second one. I embroidered a frog for Joan for her birthday. I have been doing a little embroidery, after lacking inspiration earlier in the year and finding an online class about visible mending of clothes and otherwise embellishing them. That inspired me to do a few things, only one of which involved clothes! I have also made a doll from an old shoe sole from the foreshore. This is a project I have been meaning to do for ages so I am glad to have finished her. I don't have a good finished photo yet though. Another long in the planning stage project which I have now done, is to make a paintbrush from cat whiskers. This took a long time to get ready, as many whiskers had to be collected. In addition to my cats, many client cats also contributed! The tricky part with collection is remembering that you have one in your bag wrapped in a piece of tissue or other container. This week I have been experimenting with plaster bandage, but have not decided exactly what I am doing yet! </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGYPkj4KdLOidtDqXrdFgzGfzKSS-Uc6R6qtKFpmtKd01O3vbyNvgoIJgicCLmVegrkqVpeg7DCzN8vklj0ugqm6tSXoGTzLEzjzLvnyGB3ePYIyrh3q8rSLXs8bAu20MIW3g2O12cSAgY/s2048/IMG_71581.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1644" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGYPkj4KdLOidtDqXrdFgzGfzKSS-Uc6R6qtKFpmtKd01O3vbyNvgoIJgicCLmVegrkqVpeg7DCzN8vklj0ugqm6tSXoGTzLEzjzLvnyGB3ePYIyrh3q8rSLXs8bAu20MIW3g2O12cSAgY/w514-h640/IMG_71581.jpg" width="514" /></a></div><p>Joan's frog, hanging on the frog princess dress, at least I think that would be who should wear it. It was scrunched up with a pile of clothes on a Deptford market stall, and I thought I might use the fabric as it is too small for me. When I looked at it properly though I didn't want to cut it up as I think it is beautiful. I have enjoyed looking at it hanging on the back of the bathroom door ever since! It makes a good background for the frog too. The wall on the right is halfway through being stripped and I suppose could be called 'distressed'. I quite like it!</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjNItmpksiHyw_MXAsi51Lg6DU5jzntLYDde9QkzunbMynoUXVU0riTXLB2R6YuF1dDARU91ZLBKvvOCB5KK2NgF3N4TTZxnEp4rpmGZnrFAqBW2PfE7BNc02r6PdFfgeUl3SOt8dAYnrR/s2048/IMG_7160.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjNItmpksiHyw_MXAsi51Lg6DU5jzntLYDde9QkzunbMynoUXVU0riTXLB2R6YuF1dDARU91ZLBKvvOCB5KK2NgF3N4TTZxnEp4rpmGZnrFAqBW2PfE7BNc02r6PdFfgeUl3SOt8dAYnrR/w480-h640/IMG_7160.JPG" width="480" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I appliqued the frog but chose completely the wrong sort of fabric-really easily frayed cotton, so had to stitch it all the way round. I have had some sticks lying around for a few years, picked up because of the pretty yellow lichen on them. Well, the lichen is no more, as the sticks turned out to be the perfect handles for the two brushes I made. I peeled off the bark, cleaned them up using sand paper and a slight amount of whittling, then carved the end to the right size to fit into the ferrule, made from a piece of a goose quill. (I had some of those in the drawer, also around for years!) The hardest thing to do was to cut the end of the quill to the right size. It has to be scored round and round, rather than cut straight through as it needs to stay in shape. It is a very hard, plastic like material. Actually, that was not the hardest part, it was laying the whiskers, which are nearly all slightly curved, in such a way that they lay in the same direction and form a point. I had got better at it by the second brush but it is fiddly. I used silicon glue inside the ferrule as I thought that would be a good waterproof option. I later wrapped the ferrule in plaster bandage to secure everything a bit more. You have to cut the bristles straight across at the ferule end once they are tied, with a knife/scalpel-most satisfying. I also changed what I did from his advice by making a large open knot before laying down the bristles, as I thought that would mean less movement when tying them! Another thing I did, to make it possible to poke the brush through the ferrule from the top, (once the dab of glue I used to secure the cut bristles was dry), was to use soap on the brush to form a point and let it dry. Otherwise it would be impossible to get through the hole. I was pleased with the result of this project. The brushes are very long and thin, as you would expect, and make a beautiful long thin line when pulled backwards along the paper. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlUF11oc6yYXlDjOfeJOFpXzZv5rBfUidBXlJBXPu4thdR_RljNBFS0g6plII0fbLZBpO2lQxyLPiHbBcsR3aqH-MG-8RQweL9GgTkZ8NzE9ysWWSv-K5mXMwlE0Qx4TnMFCuz6yJloo9U/s2048/IMG_7244.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlUF11oc6yYXlDjOfeJOFpXzZv5rBfUidBXlJBXPu4thdR_RljNBFS0g6plII0fbLZBpO2lQxyLPiHbBcsR3aqH-MG-8RQweL9GgTkZ8NzE9ysWWSv-K5mXMwlE0Qx4TnMFCuz6yJloo9U/w640-h480/IMG_7244.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>What to do with the doll's feet took me a while to work out. I wanted her to stand up, and originally planned to use clay with a slot in, and make two feet together. Then I thought I could use a wire armature, and poke the wire through the holes in the sole, and make her stand up. I realised after a bit of experimentation that it would not work. In the end, I kept the wire, with sewn and stuffed feet around it, and card soles in the bottom, and decided to use plaster bandage around them. I have a picture somewhere of me walking along holding her hand. She is looking quite scary in this picture but she isn't really. She used to talk, by the magic of little coloured records that went in her back. I can't remember what she said. She also 'walks', with a little manipulation. Her clothes when I brought her back from Mum's, where she lived for a long time, were a white lacy dress and a blue and red stripey poncho. This dress and jumper are from a charity shop. She is just about big enough for small children's clothes. The trunk behind her belonged to one of Andy's relatives, Captain Borland, and makes a good tv stand. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFfrvNCbbO4Df29hcQ8aVKTf7jqmR0HQ1OqdPUGDutzwnU6_ufmppdNkhSEaXAcGamzZyk7hWDO22Ca-9Us30jK0CTzUWiOLBI7gPgwJsaCmU4hjnVjF1WhlQezNSOK9sgqFiJMYb9mDzb/s2048/IMG_6996.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFfrvNCbbO4Df29hcQ8aVKTf7jqmR0HQ1OqdPUGDutzwnU6_ufmppdNkhSEaXAcGamzZyk7hWDO22Ca-9Us30jK0CTzUWiOLBI7gPgwJsaCmU4hjnVjF1WhlQezNSOK9sgqFiJMYb9mDzb/w480-h640/IMG_6996.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>This is also from a charity shop and was bought for the front cover, rather than the information inside, though it does have lots of photos of great old buses. Just behind is a wooden London bus from a great junk shop in Greenwich. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNB8oh63hyihE9Bo1NkwWlqxcrYHC_ge-Bne5BC_va8qvPvOv473iQTi-kwj_dBONkUTty5b5pCj_yqfVJHpokExIeg086bkTvA-38Vn3m5EsNm1coHVKpWDjDmGXlZjdbIUmRwFgMMqI7/s2048/IMG_7279.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNB8oh63hyihE9Bo1NkwWlqxcrYHC_ge-Bne5BC_va8qvPvOv473iQTi-kwj_dBONkUTty5b5pCj_yqfVJHpokExIeg086bkTvA-38Vn3m5EsNm1coHVKpWDjDmGXlZjdbIUmRwFgMMqI7/w640-h480/IMG_7279.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>The final red and black picture is from a recent trip to the foreshore. This is the oil cap (I think) of a recently deceased boat near the yacht club. At the beginning of the summer the rest of the boat was there, but now only the engine and a buoy remain, too heavy to have been broken and floated away. I would really have liked to take the oil cap, but I thought that if I did then the oil inside would get into the river so I left it. I did find a light with glass still intact, an enamel dish and some cutlery, all of which I took.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGHNlqKnLeH-9ksuiXajXAurQBNry3r97GdRdl4pQGvJXBJty_Iwgg8rHFyQjHg3pgWj-1FGbCguGsHmWwzlYS5N6m2RMubpSilBVqUQ7rHbFZ-4xHELII7eDnJvaPCWkr7vkOiaFnltKA/s2048/IMG_5382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGHNlqKnLeH-9ksuiXajXAurQBNry3r97GdRdl4pQGvJXBJty_Iwgg8rHFyQjHg3pgWj-1FGbCguGsHmWwzlYS5N6m2RMubpSilBVqUQ7rHbFZ-4xHELII7eDnJvaPCWkr7vkOiaFnltKA/w480-h640/IMG_5382.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>This is what it looked like. I wonder who it belonged to and why it ended up there. Just next to the pier is another wreck that has been there all the time I have been going there. So now it has a friend. <br /><br /> <p></p>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941415622199071141noreply@blogger.com3
